Course Reflective Narrative:
By taking this course I fulfilled MLO 3: Literary and Cultural Knowledge. Over the course of about 2 1/2 months I was able to learn a lot of new information about many different aspects of Chilean life and culture. We covered topics such as marianismo and machismo in Chilean culture, which has to do with gender views of men and women. We also focused on the dictatorship that took place not too long ago in the country before they became a developing first world country and democracy. One of the last things we discussed was politics in the country and how they worked.
Another way in which this course fulfilled MLO 3: Literary and Cultural Knowledge, is that in order to learn more about the Chilean Culture we were given reading supplements each week, where we were able to learn more about popular books and writers of the country. One of the most famous writers in the country, that Chileans are very proud of is, Pablo Neruda, who was a famous poet throughout the dictatorship until his death. I also investigated more writers such as Isabel Allende and Nicanor Parra, whose writings gave me even more literary knowledge of the country.
Taking this course was very informative and gave me more in-depth information about the Chilean Culture, and even more so, it helped me assimilate much easier into Chilean life as I was living abroad for my first time.
Culture courses like these aid me in my Spanish career because they give me a brief look into different Spanish-speaking cultures all over the world and let me see how cultures are different than my own. I can continue to take courses like these in order to learn even more about different cultures around the world; which will then benefit me in the work place when working with diverse people.
