My Service Learning Experience
My Service Learning Experience at CSUMB has been a really life-changing and eye-opening experience. It started when I took my lower-divison Service Learning Course all about educational equity and social justices found within the school system. These topics really interested me and I found myself devoting a lot of time to this class and because of this, my professor recommended that I apply to be a Service Learning Student Leader on campus, which of course, I did. I became a Service Learning Student Leader the same year that I took my upper-divsion Service Learning course; Service Learning in the Latino Community.
During the semester I took SL in the Latino Community, I did my service at El Sausal Middle School, which is where I also worked as a Service Learning Student Leader. As a Service Learning Student Leader on campus I go into Service Learning classes and present about my site, El Sausal and the opportunities there are to do service. When CSUMB students decide to do service at El Sausal I get them started and help them to make the connection between service and the course where they discuss many social justice issues and personal identity themes. At El Sausal the CSUMB Service Learner's and myself act as tutors for 7th and 8th grade AVID students twice a week during tutorials. During tutorials students work together in groups of 5 or 6 to help each other solve homework problems and the tutors act as a guide and help answer any questions that the group cannot answer amongst themselves.El Sausal also offers after school tutoring, known as "Think Tank", where students who are failing in one or more subjects can come in and get extra help from their teachers and also from CSUMB students who have volunteered their time to do service and give back to the community.
As I said before, this was a very unique opportunity and I am so grateful I was given the chance to do this kind of work on campus, not only as a Service Learning Student Leader, but as a college student in itself. I found it very eye-opening to the many issues that can be found in the school system, and all the other social justice issues that are found in my community. I especially enjoyed being a Service Learner in the Service Learning in the Latino Community because not everyone did service at the same site, so during class I was able to hear about my peers experiences as well and see what they were getting from their service. We were also able to connect our service with issues in the community we chose to service and the Latino community around the world.
Attached below is one of my first reflections/journal entries about service. We were required to keep notes or a journal about our service so that we could make a longer reflection at the end of the semester, which is also attached below. I thought that this might be a good piece to demonstrate my Service Learning Experience because it shows what I noticed in the community and at the school and what I was getting from the experience.
The final reflection of our whole semester of Service Learning is something I really enjoyed because it gave me a chance to reflect upon everything I had learned and really see how much I had grown. I am now able to name social injustices that can be found in the community of Salinas that I had not known about before and I definitely want to find a job that allows me to continue to be part of the community I am in and give back to it.
